When the ASHA went from all paper work to using computer, and the program would not let anyone use the same name anymore nor could change the names of Suffolk Punch Horse already in the computer, so asterisk were used to show that same name but with asterisk for each time the next showed up with the same name, so some will have one asterisk others will have more asterisks, I think the most asterisks that were used for more that one name were up to four or five. With the computer it scans for duplicate names and automatically won't register that one-name horse.
In the new program, if the sire or dam was DNA & parentage verified, they have an asterisk,
But if you are asking about the asterisk like listed below:
Sire 3257-S - Copper of Brynterion *
Dam 3805-M - B Bar Emma *
It shows that both sire and dam have DNA on file as notified by parentage verified.
As of Jan of 2003 all foals born and register had to be DNA check to show they came from the Sire and Dam that was sent in.
